Up Periscope: 10 Million Viewers and Counting
Are you one of the millions of people that enjoy viewing the world through someone else’s eyes using a mobile streaming service? Though many services have popped up in the last few years, last week, live streaming company, Periscope, announced that they have gained 10 million viewers in just four and a half months. A subsidiary of Twitter, Periscope noted their progress in a blog post and shared data showing that approximately 40 years’ worth of live streaming footage is being watched every day on their platform. That equates to 21 million minutes every 24 hours.
Interestingly, the chief metric that the company is reporting on is “time watched” instead of average daily or monthly users. They explain that by saying, “It’s most reflective of the value we’re creating for people and the world. Success for broadcasters means more time watched on their broadcasts. Success for the audience (viewers who are watching and participating in a Periscope) means more high quality broadcasts in their feeds that they want to watch and participate in. Success for broadcasters and their audience means success for Periscope.”
As this trend continues to grow, companies should take note and begin to figure out how to use this technology to reach their audience in a new way. Live Q and A sessions; a live company announcement; a backstage pass to what goes on behind the scenes at your organization; these are just a few of the ways your company could begin to be a part of this trend. Get creative and start live streaming!
