The expERIEnce Children’s Museum is a local gem known for inspiring creativity, exploration, and imagination in children of all ages. When they came to us for a website redesign, they were in the middle of an $18 million renovation that included a top-to-bottom makeover of their existing building, a 19,000-square-foot addition, and an outdoor classroom. Our team was tasked with making a creative new digital space that matched their upgraded physical space while mindfully engaging moms, teachers, caregivers, and children, as well as potential teammates, volunteers, board members, and donors. This was our second website design with the nonprofit and an incredible collaboration we will hold close to our hearts forever.
Tier one needs: creating easily accessible visitor information, specifically on current exhibits, upcoming events, hours of operation, and how to buy tickets. Tier two needs: attracting and engaging donors, volunteers, and board members and sharing info on ways to give or get involved. Tier three needs: sharing info on the ECM team and providing educational resources. Beyond the needs, we knew the website had to be wildly creative and undeniably unique to feel reflective of the new museum and simultaneously be easy to use for busy caregivers, parents, and teachers.
Our favorite aspects of the finished site are the unique movements and responsive elements we built in. The custom, animated illustrations, responsive button hovers, moving icons, and scroll-activated pirate map bring the element of play in a big way — which is precisely what a children’s museum needs.
